In May of this year, we celebrated spreading our wings and leaving our corporate jobs for a life on the road by packing our few possessions into a suitcase, hiring a 4×4 and heading off on a whirlwind 14 day round trip exploration from Cape Town up to the Kalagadi.
In our previous two posts, 14 Day Northern Cape Road Trip and Places to Stay in the Northern Cape, we outlined the trip we took (with kilometers and hours taken) as well as detailed explanations of our accommodation. If you interested in taking a trip like ours, please check out those posts.
However this road trip wasn’t just about time on the road or nights spent in the tent. We had a little bucket list of activities and sights to cross off.
Sundowners at Khamkirri

As mentioned in our previous post. We actually camped at Khamkirri for three nights. We highly recommend it. The projecting boma with gorgeous views over the Orange River makes the perfect setting to enjoy a sundowner beer or two. They also have a full restaurant serving a variety of tasty snacks and meals at super affordable rates, so sundowners can always be extended to dinner if the wind blows you in this direction.
As a day visitor you can even make use of the canoes, paddle boats or take a sundowner cruise. Highly recommend paying Khamkirri a visit, even if its just for the evening.
The Augrabies Falls has to be on your South African Bucket list. The incredible place gets its name from the Khoi san word “Aukoerebis” meaning Place of Great Noise. This is due to the deafening sound the falls make as water thunders from its rocky outcrops into the 18km abyss of the Orange River Gorge.
The falls are situated within the Augrabies National Park and while the falls itself are a must (these are very easily accessible via boardwalks), some of the other highlights of the park are definitely also worth a visit.
There are a few hikes and view points to visit, all clearly marked and laid out on the parks boards and maps, however for us the highlight was taking a drive to the Oranjekom lookout point. It takes about half an hour from the main rest camp to reach this awe-inspiring spot. With breathtaking views down to the Orange River, you get immersed in the sense of vastness of the river forging its way through the red landscape.
SANS park have even gone so far as to build a two-sleeper cottage overlooking the ravine and had we known about this before hand, we absolutely would have tried to book a night. So if you get the chance to stay at the cottage and watch the sun rise over this incredible landscape, then please let us know. We have added it to our South African bucket list.
Easily the biggest surprise of our trip was visiting the Riemvasmaak Hotsprings. We had zero expectations going into the outing and WOW, easily the best kept secret of the Northern Cape. We started by taking a little day trip from Khamkirri through to the tiny town of Riemvasmaak, from here there are clear signs guiding you through to the Hot Springs. It is worth noting that a good 4×4 with high clearance and thick walled tyres is absolutely necessary to make this trip, the roads are very rocky and steep.
The Hot Springs are run by the community and as such all entrance fees (for us it was R75 each) are used to keep the Hot Springs going. There are two main pools. The large, exposed pool which is also incidentally the warmer one is located in the middle of the ravine, the flanking cliffs enhancing the feeling of being lost in the desert. As beautiful as this pool is, don’t be encapsulated by it, go searching for the smaller pool, it is a little hidden gem.
If you are walking from the parking lot towards the pools, keep going as you pass the main pool on your right, a small path will open up and as you walk into the bushes a beautiful rock pool with trickling water will present itself. It is a gloriously private space (provided you are the only visitors, like we were). Such a peaceful gem. Let us know if you find it.
There is also a camping ground with basic ablutions and we can just imagine how beautiful it must be to sit in the Hotsprings at night and stargaze. Real oasis in the middle on nowhere.
Game viewing means so much to us. Days spent driving in a 4×4 from one spot to the next, embracing the open roads with zero expectations, just dreams on what we hope to see. The Kgalagadi delivered just that.
Tucked away in the boarders between South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, this Park is very different to many that we are used to coming from KZN. Instead of lush greenery, we found dry river beds and dusty red sand dunes. During this visit we only managed to explore the South African section of the park, but even so we were not disappointed.
During our many game drives we saw Gemsbok (after whom the park used to be named), Springbok, Wildebeest, Jackals, Secretary Bird, Kori Bustards, Ostriches, Bat-eared foxes and even a wonderful sighting of two Cheetah brothers. Unfortunately the black mane Kalahari Lion alluded us for our stay. However the highlight for us came on our last day as we were making our way down to the main entrance from Nossob Rest Camp. We approached a convoy of vehicles pulled off on the side of the road and joined to see what was causing the commotion. Much to our absolute delight, we witnessed a female leopard and her two teenage cubs playing and basking in the morning light. We were delighted. As we moved on, we couldn’t believe our luck again as we approached the Melkvlei picnic park. Here we were greeted with the most incredible sight of an 18-month old female leopard using the picnic facilities as her own jungle gym. These are easily our best Leopard sightings and all those hours in the car searching were worth it for that alone.
Apollo de Karoo was another completely unexpected find of our trip. In our previous post, Places to Stay in the Northern Cape we mentioned these incredible teepees situated in the heart of the Onder- Karoo.
A Mere 84km from Sutherland, which is renowned for its Stargazing, owner Paula does not renege on her promise to offer the most amazing Stargazing experience.
Not only do you get to sleep in your own beautiful teepee but it is possible (if weather allows) to take your bedding and mattress out to your own elevated platform and bask under the beauty that is a starry South African sky.
Sounds like a dream right?
And lastly, one of the beautiful things about staying at the Richtersveld Wilderness Camp is being able to take part in many of the water sports on the Orange River. Richtersveld Wilderness Camp have plenty Canoes and paddles for you to use at your own leisure.
We had a glorious having a picnic lunch out on the river, paddling down to a river side spot and stopping for a snack.
The camp is also conveniently located next to a few adventure sport camps, meaning that you can also satisfy the adrenaline junkie in you. We didn’t manage to fit any adventure sports in but the region is well known for its white water rafting.
Two such companies located within a very close drive to Richtersveld Wilderness Camp are Orange River Rafting and Amanzi River Trails.
